I Am – The So Hum Meditation
I’m a 9 on the Enneagram.
Enneagram 9s believe that if we put attention on ourselves, we are going go create disruption and chaos. In order to avoid disruption and chaos, we put all our energy on everyone else around us. We are there to help them through the rough times. We are there to help them move forward in their lives, supporting them every step of the way.
But, putting that type of energy into our own life, we freeze. Or, more accurately, we fall asleep. This is why the sin of the Enneagram 9 is known as “sloth.”
Sloth is not being lazy. On the contrary, 9s can have tons of energy and be very effective…if it is for someone else’s benefit. Ask a 9 to do something to move their own life forward and suddenly binge watching a TV shows seems like the best idea ever.
Hence, it is very important for Enneagram 9s to learn to focus on their own life. It is important for them to learn that their presence matters. It is very important that they believe it.
This is why the “So Hum” mantra is one of my favorite mantras. So Hum means “I am.”
There is something reaffirming about chanting, “I Am.” As an Enneagram 9, it is almost scary to say, “I am. I am.” Add to that sentence and it becomes even more scary. “I am here. I am important. I am powerful.”
But when you look at the literal Sanskrit translation, the meditation becomes the perfect practice for an Enneagram 9. So Hum translated into English is “I am that.”
“That” refers to the Universal Consciousness. When chanting So Hum, you are chanting, “I am Universal Consciousness.” “I am Universal Consciousness.” “I am Universal Consciousness.”
This is very comforting for an Enneagram 9. Being one with everything means you are an equal part. It means that you matter. It also means everyone else matters, which is reassuring to an Enneagram 9. It also means that we will always be one. There is a beauty in being one with everything.
This is why I believe this mantra is so magical. The two meanings of “So Hum” are like two sides of the same coin. One side of the “So Hum” coin affirms your presence in the world. The other side of the “So Hum” coin affirms you are one with everything.
So, how do you meditation with “So Hum?” It’s a simple practice, really.
- Sit in a comfortable position.
- Take 3 deep breaths.
- Take a moment to relax the body, especially the shoulders and jaw.
- Become aware of your breath as it moves in and out of the body.
- In your mind, chant “Soooo” as you slowly breathe in.
- In your mind, chant “Hummmm” as you slowly breathe out.
Once you have that meditation down, you can deepen the meditation by adding movement to your breath.
- In your mind, chant “Soooo” as you slowly breathe in through the nose moving the energy coming in from the nose up to the third eye.
- In your mind, chant “Hummmm” as you slowly breathe out through the nose moving the energy from the third eye down the spine to the base of the spine.
- In your mind, chant “Soooo” as you slowly breathe in through the nose as you move the energy from the base of the spine up to the third eye.
- In your mind, chant “Hummmm” as you slowly breathe out from the nose moving the energy from the third eye out the nose.
Energetically, this mantra brings fresh, clean energy into you on the in breath. You get energized. On the out breath you exhale stale, toxic energy. You get relaxed and peaceful. As you fill yourself with clean energy, you may notice your energetic field expanding outward all around you. Ultimately it merges with the Universe.
The final goal of chanting So Hum mantra is to merge with and actually become Universal Consciousness. If you’d like an audio recording for So Hum to follow, try this YouTube video.
The So Hum mantra is a powerful and beneficial meditation for everyone, not just Enneagram 9s. So, try the So Hum a few times. Notice how you feel before you meditate and then after. Notice any changes. And if you don’t feel any changes, that’s okay too!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. It is one of the meditations I do regularly. I hope it is as helpful for you as it is for me.
