This is an oldie but goodie post about the Mercury retrograde. This time it officially starts on Tuesday, March 5th, but I swear it feels like we have been in a retrograde for weeks already. Just this morning a client couldn’t make it to their appointment because her garage door broke. When scheduling to pay my credit card, the pending payment showed up twice. When I canceled one, they both went away. So I said, “Screw it,” and just paid it off there and then. I didn’t want to chance scheduling it in the future. Needless to say, I think this one is going to be a doozy. So fasten your seat belts – it’s going to be bumpy ride.
So, I’m reposting this blog with a little more information on WHY, even though the retrograde hasn’t officially started, we are starting to feel its effect already.
On Tuesday, March 5th, Mercury goes into retrograde and starts causing havoc in our lives.
What does that even mean?
Literally it means that the planet Mercury appears to be going backwards in the night sky. The planet isn’t literally going backwards, it “appears” to be going backwards. The correct term is apparent retrograde motion. Okay, but what does that mean for us earth dwellers?
In astrology, the planet Mercury rules communication, travel, contracts, automobiles and other large appliances. Hence, Mercury retrogrades are notorious for creating chaos in the form of miscommunications, broken appliances, unexpected delays, and people from the past suddenly appearing in your life.
I’m a huge believer in this. I try to prepare as much as I can before and go with the flow during the retrograde. Despite this planning, the retrograde usually gets me in one way or another. For example, once during a retrograde I sent out a sub request for my yoga class. The next day I received a response from a teacher saying she would do it. I then sent out notification to everyone saying that the class was covered and thanked the teacher who was covering it.
An hour or so later, I received a text from another teacher saying, “If you are mad at me, please just tell me. I’m about keeping the throat chakra open and prefer direct communication.”
I had no f’ing idea what she was talking about. I mean, I knew what she was talking about in regards to the throat chakra, but I had no idea why she thought I was mad at her. So, I responded that I wasn’t mad at her.
She said, “Did you get me email?”
To which I said, “What email?”
Apparently, she had sent an email to me right after I sent out the sub request saying she could teach the class. Usually subs are given to the first teacher to respond. So, she was confused as to why I gave the class to another teacher who responded a day later. I searched all through my email, even the junk, spam and trash files. There was nothing from her. Luckily, she believes in retrogrades, too, and totally understood. I had another mishap like that a couple of days later, but I don’t remember the details. Things happen that you couldn’t possibly foresee during a retrograde causing delays, miscommunications and chaos. So, how do you avoid the frustrations?
Well, you don’t really. You can do your best to get all your projects tied up before it starts. And try to not start projects or sign contracts or purchase big appliances during a retrograde. You can do your best to be prepared. But that doesn’t mean the appliances you already have won’t have issues. For example, both of our cars needed repairs during the last retrograde. One we knew was coming. The other was a nice phone call from the mechanic during a routine oil change. So also be prepared for the retrograde to throw Murphy’s Law in your face.
Another point to consider, I think retrogrades throw in our face anything in our lives we aren’t dealing with. Bad relationships, bad jobs, issues we are avoiding dealing with, lessons we just aren’t learning. I think it is important to pay attention to what is happens in a retrograde. It is a good time to learn what is wrong in your life and strive to fix it. Time and time again I have clients who hit a breaking point in their relationships during a retrograde. It’s like the universe is saying, “Are you SURE you want to stay in this relationship? Don’t you think there might be something better for you? Less toxic, maybe?” It can be lighter things, too. For example, if things keep happening to slow you down in your day or make you late, maybe you need to learn patience or how to go with the flow. If you run into an old high school buddy randomly, maybe ask yourself what that person represents. Not everything has meaning. But it’s good to keep your eyes open and listen to your intuition.
And, one last lovely point about the Mercury Retrograde. This happy, hazardous time isn’t just during the 25 or so days the planet appears to be moving backwards in the night sky. Oh no, that would be too easy. We have the pre-retrograde and post-retrograde time periods to be aware of as well. During the pre-retrograde, mercury’s movement across the night sky starts to slow down. This is when the crazy things start to stir up. When the planet stops and appears to move “backwards” is when the official retrograde happens. In the post-retrograde, mercury starts to pick up speed again, appearing to be moving in the correct direction, but is still moving slowly enough to cause havoc in our lives. (Note: Mercury itself is constantly moving at the same rate and in the same direction. Something else is going on with the lining up of Earth and Mercury that is causing this wacky optical illusion.) So, if you are feeling like the retrograde has already started before the official date, this is why. Some people think the pre-retrograde is worse than the retrograde itself. In my experience, every retrograde is different. I mean, isn’t that the point of the retrograde? We can’t really count on anything!
So, what can you do to make a retrograde less frustrating? Go with the flow, learn to laugh and learn to surrender. Once, while driving, I ran into three fender bender accidents slowing down traffic. The first two I turned onto a side street to find a different route. When I ran into the third, I just laughed and said, “Okay, retrograde, you win.” I patiently waited with everyone else to get past the fender bender. Retrogrades are a good time to learn that, no matter how much you plan and prepare, life still happens. You can push against it, or you can surrender and enjoy the ride.
Tips for Retrograde Survival
#1 Cardio. Just Kidding. Little Zombieland humor there…
1) Allow extra time to get to appointments.
2) Document important communications and follow-up.
3) Remain flexible.
4) Meditate to the Ganesha mantra, or just say it as you go about your day. Click here for my blog on the Ganesha Meditation.
5) Avoid making any big decisions or buying any big appliances, including cars, computers and vacations. Do all the research you want, but don’t pull the trigger until after.
And when is this “After?” When does this chaos end? March 29th officially. The post-retrograde ends April 16th. And, just to be on the safe side, here are the dates for the other two retrogrades of 2019
Pre starts June 20 / Official July 7th through August 1st / Post ends August 15th
Pre starts Oct 11th / Official Oct 31st – November 20th / Post ends December 7th
So mark your calendars and wear seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. (Zombieland Rule #3).
