Your Healing Journey on a Dime

As a society, we believe money makes the world go round. We believe money is involved with everything. Hence, we believe walking the healing path will be expensive. And if we don’t have the money, we can’t do it.

I’m here to tell you that, from my own experience, this isn’t true.

There have been many, many, many times in my life when I have not had extra money. And, frankly, those have been the times when I have needed the most healing. But, I’ve always found a way to heal, money or no money.

When it comes to learning how to live a healthy life style: mind, body and spirit – there are many free resources. And when it comes to living that healthy life style: eating healthy, moving your body, removing psychological blocks, loving who you are – there, too, we have many economical resources. You just need the time and patience to do a little research.

I am the monster. Goo Goo Gajoob!

Since the beginning of the year, I have been trying to walk a new path in my life. A proactive path where I create my own life. If this sounds common, or ridiculous, please know that for a 9 on the Enneagram this is terrifying. As a 9, I like to merge with others. I am comfortable helping people live their lives. Which means, I’m not great on living my own life.

This might seem odd to you coming from me. Me, who took a risk and left the corporate world to become a massage therapist when everyone else told me it was a bad idea. But I’ll let you in on a little secret…sometimes 9s look fear in the face and say, “Don’t care.”

The Gifts of the Personalities of the Enneagram Series – Type 1 The Reformer

When discussing the Enneagram, we often talk about the struggles of each number. I thought it would be fun to discuss the gifts each number brings to us. In Enneagram wisdom, each number has a strength that society needs. Furthermore, if we were to incorporate all 9 of the personality gifts into our own behavior, we would reach enlightenment. Over time, I’ll be dedicating a blog to each personality.

We’ll start with Enneagram Type 1 – The Reformer.

The Type 1 personality looks at the world with idealism. They see all that is wrong with our world and want to make it a better place. That better place can be within their own family, neighborhood, work place or the country. Of all the personalities, 1s have a strong inner sense of right and wrong. This sense of justice is expected of themselves and of the world around them.

Hence, one of the big gifts Enneagram 1s bring to our world is Integrity. Ones will not expect of others anything they would not expect of themselves. And through this, they walk through the world being what they wished the world would be.

Because of this strong integrity, 1s have a sense of will power stronger than any other number. Once they know what is expected of them, they will work their hardest to fulfill and exceed those expectations. This sense of right and wrong, integrity and will-power makes them the ideal person to have on your team.

I Am – The So Hum Meditation

I’m a 9 on the Enneagram.

Enneagram 9s believe that if we put attention on ourselves, we are going go create disruption and chaos. In order to avoid disruption and chaos, we put all our energy on everyone else around us. We are there to help them through the rough times. We are there to help them move forward in their lives, supporting them every step of the way.

But, putting that type of energy into our own life, we freeze. Or, more accurately, we fall asleep. This is why the sin of the Enneagram 9 is known as “sloth.”

Sloth is not being lazy. On the contrary, 9s can have tons of energy and be very effective…if it is for someone else’s benefit. Ask a 9 to do something to move their own life forward and suddenly binge watching a TV shows seems like the best idea ever.

Hence, it is very important for Enneagram 9s to learn to focus on their own life. It is important for them to learn that their presence matters. It is very important that they believe it.

This is why the “So Hum” mantra is one of my favorite mantras. So Hum means “I am.” Continue reading I Am – The So Hum Meditation

The Wisdom of Gary Zukav and the Enneagram

“Reality is what we take to be true.
What we take to be true is what we believe.
What we believe is based upon our perceptions.
What we perceive depends upon what we look for.
What we look for depends upon what we think.
What we think depends upon what we perceive.
What we perceive determines what we believe.
What we believe determines what we take to be true.
What we take to be true is our reality.” – Gary Zukav

I’ve been dabbling into the teachings of Gary Zukav lately. I was introduced to him through Oprah Winfrey, who says his book, “Seat of the Soul,” was the a huge influence in her life. She embraced his belief of being aware of the intention behind all your actions and it changed the face of her show. His teaching on  intention is pretty powerful stuff.  Searching for more Zukav wisdom, I was looking through some of his more quotable statements when a couple of them struck me as very Enneagram-ish. Meaning, he has the same idea of spiritual growth as the teachings of the Enneagram.

For example, there is this lovely quote.

“Changing the world begins with the very personal process of changing yourself, the only place you can begin is where you are, and the only time you can begin is always now.”

The Enneagram teaches you can only change you. You can’t change others. Continue reading The Wisdom of Gary Zukav and the Enneagram

Am I Normal? Enneagram 5

An example of why the Enneagram is so helpful in relationships.

I saw this postcard on PostSecret and it broke my heart a little bit.

This is a perfect example of how much the Enneagram can help people. I would guess that this person is an Enneagram Type 5. Continue reading Am I Normal? Enneagram 5

What is an “Any-a-Gram?”

The Nine Personalities of the Enneagram

The Enneagram system and how it helps Yoga Nerds walk the healing path.

If you missed my previous blog on why I love the Enneagram and how it helped me on my healing journey, you can read it here.

Every time I try to describe the Enneagram, it comes out very flat and uninteresting. It sounds like I’m describing yet another personality test that will, yet again, tell you that you are a questioning, introverted, emotional person. But what good does that information do? Most personality tests give you black and white information and no guidance on what to do with it. It’s like the test is saying, “You are what you are. Live with it.”

The Enneagram doesn’t do that. Not even close.

Why the Enneagram is My Favorite Yoga Nerd Tool

The first time I heard about the Enneagram was in 2003 from my college roommate. She asked me to go online and take this personality test. So I did. It said I was a personality type 6 – the loyalist. She exclaimed, “I knew it! I knew it!” I read the description and thought, yeah, that could be me. I didn’t think much of it after that.

In 2004 I started going to therapy to figure out why I kept making the same mistakes in relationships over and over again. I had just ended an engagement and knew I needed some healing. My therapist used the Enneagram in her practice, so I told her, “I’m a 6.” After talking a bit, she said, “Have you looked at personality type 9 – the peacemaker?” I defiantly said no, I was a 6. She gently handed me a piece of paper that described the 9. I remember looking at it and recoiling because, damn it, I was a 6. But, wait…maybe? My therapist suggested I go home and read about the personality type 9.

And I did. It freaked me out. Continue reading Why the Enneagram is My Favorite Yoga Nerd Tool

Why read my blog, Heather the Yoga Nerd?

First of all, what IS a Yoga Nerd?

According to the Urban Dictionary,  a Nerd is “an individual who: 1. Enjoys learning 2. Does not adhere to social norms.”

That about sums it up. A nerd is someone who is passionate about something so much that they are constantly learning about it and doesn’t care what other people think. So here’s the thing, I’m not just passionate about superheroes and light sabers, I’m passionate about yoga and healing.

Heather the Yoga Nerd is about being a nerd in your healing. We’re talking spiritual healing, as well as physical, mental and emotional healing. It is about wearing down the false outer layers until you find the real you. There is nothing better in the world than seeing someone grow and change right before your eyes. It’s even better than seeing Thor in all his muscular glory. It is about your healing and learning to love yourself for every bit of yourself.

Now, I’m not stuffy or overly serious about this self-growth and spiritual healing. Being a nerd means enjoying learning. You have to have fun along the way, right? That’s why I’m writing this blog. Healing can be fun. Yes, there are rough times when you have to look at the dark side of yourself. But, we don’t succumb to the dark side. We learn compassion for it. If we push it away, ignore it, or hate it we will succumb to the dark side of the force. Fear, Hatred, being completely unaware of the negative behavior patterns we have created is the life of the dark side. But I digress…

What makes healing fun is having group of like-minded people for support. You need like-minded people who can help you laugh and let go when you need. A group of people who will be as excited as you to try that new cauliflower taco recipe. Like-minded people who understand when you explain a bizarre healing experience or revelation you had that opened up a whole new door into your true self. A group of people who are going through the same experiences as you. Because, the other part of being a nerd is not adhering to social norms.

Now, we aren’t going to be so crazy that our family will check us into a mental health institution. But, as we change and grow, our behaviors change. Sometimes it throws people off and creates awkward situations. And anytime you make people uncomfortable you are walking outside social norms. But having a club gives us courage! And on the other side of that awkwardness is a lightness and peace that is the best feeling ever. I know because I’ve been there.

When I work with my wonderful clients, I am always sharing experiences from my journey.  Everyone starts at the beginning.  And the beginning isn’t always pretty! Along with sharing my stories, I am giving them tools to help them on their healing journey.  I teach them about the Enneagram and I provide energy healing. I teach them yoga and meditation. But not everyone lives in my city. Not everyone has access to one-on-one sessions with me.  SO! My hope is to take what I do in a session with a client and put it into this blog to help YOU on YOUR healing journey.

That is why I’m writing this blog – to share what I have learned on my journey. I want to share everything I’ve learned to help others heal. I want to help people discover how wonderful they are are fall in love with who they are. I want to help people find their inner healing nerd.

Where did your healing journey start? Was it an “aha!” moment? Or was it a difficult time in your life?  Feel free to share your story in the comments below.
