Surrender and Heal

In 2003, I was engaged to a very nice man we will call Allen. I have talked about this engagement before. As a recap, Allen had a six year old daughter. He also had a mother that considered the daughter her daughter. So, in his mother’s eyes, I was taking away her only son and her “daughter” she had a “special relationship” with. Furthermore, the daughter had ADD, and I was trying my best to create a healthy lifestyle for her to help with her ADD.

I was trying to force my will against something that, frankly, wasn’t going to change.

One morning, the mother/grandmother came by to pick up the daughter/granddaughter. I was still in bed. It is funny how you know the sounds and routines in your house. I could tell by the pause from when the front door opened and when it closed that the mother/grandmother had a “little conversation” with Allen. And my intuition knew exactly what the conversation was: she was upset at how I had “treated her” the night before at a family function.

And inside, something broke.

I realized that I was striving for acceptance in a family that didn’t like me. I was trying not to act like a mother while doing all the “mom” work. I was twisted in knots and not being myself. That break was me surrendering. I surrendered to the reality that I was sacrificing who I was in order to be with him…and it wasn’t working.

With reality of the situation hitting me, I realized I had two choices. If I stayed in this situation, I would not be who I was in 5 years. I would be someone completely different. And if I left, I would be breaking off an engagement and hurting someone I truly cared for, but I would be saving myself from destruction. Continue reading Surrender and Heal

Self-Reflection: An Essential tool on the Yoga Nerd Path

Self-Reflection is the first step to Self-Awareness.

What the heck does that mean? Let’s break it down.

Self-Awareness – knowing one’s internal states, preferences, resources and intuitions. Daniel Goleman, Emotional Intelligence.

Self-Awareness is conscious, in the moment knowledge of one’s own character, feelings, motives and desires. Self-awareness is a key factor in the healing path. It is the surveying tool needed to create a map of yourself. Once you have a map of yourself, you know where you want to go. But it’s not easy. Being self-aware is being present; it basically means living in the moment. It’s very hard to be self-aware.  This is why learning self-reflection is so important.

Let’s talk briefly about being present and not present in your life. Most of us walk through life on automatic pilot. We have habits and reactions that drive our behavior without us even thinking about it. Driving a car is a good example. Continue reading Self-Reflection: An Essential tool on the Yoga Nerd Path

Smiling Makes Us All Superheros

Back in 2009, life was a bit stressful in the Yoga Nerd household. My husband’s business was still finding its feet and he wasn’t taking a paycheck.  I wasn’t making enough to cover all the bills, so our credit card debt was rising.

Driving to a massage gig one day, my mind was spinning on all of these stresses. My stress level was rising with every spin around my fears. It was very uncomfortable and not helpful at all. And I was very aware it was not fair to my clients to receive massages from a person whose mind was spinning in stress and fear. I needed to do something to change my state of mind. Am I Normal? Enneagram 5

An example of why the Enneagram is so helpful in relationships.

I saw this postcard on PostSecret and it broke my heart a little bit.

This is a perfect example of how much the Enneagram can help people. I would guess that this person is an Enneagram Type 5. Continue reading Am I Normal? Enneagram 5

How Becoming Centered and Grounded will Keep You from Exploding

Life happens. And often that life is frustratingly full of annoyances and mean people. Being centered and grounded is your one defense against irrational emotional explosions and possibly jail. I’m here to help you learn these Yoga Nerd tools.

But first, what is centering and grounding? Sometimes people see them as the same thing.  I find them to be very different but equally important. They are the magic combo to mastering your reactions. Continue reading How Becoming Centered and Grounded will Keep You from Exploding

Why read my blog, Heather the Yoga Nerd?

First of all, what IS a Yoga Nerd?

According to the Urban Dictionary,  a Nerd is “an individual who: 1. Enjoys learning 2. Does not adhere to social norms.”

That about sums it up. A nerd is someone who is passionate about something so much that they are constantly learning about it and doesn’t care what other people think. So here’s the thing, I’m not just passionate about superheroes and light sabers, I’m passionate about yoga and healing.

Heather the Yoga Nerd is about being a nerd in your healing. We’re talking spiritual healing, as well as physical, mental and emotional healing. It is about wearing down the false outer layers until you find the real you. There is nothing better in the world than seeing someone grow and change right before your eyes. It’s even better than seeing Thor in all his muscular glory. It is about your healing and learning to love yourself for every bit of yourself.

Now, I’m not stuffy or overly serious about this self-growth and spiritual healing. Being a nerd means enjoying learning. You have to have fun along the way, right? That’s why I’m writing this blog. Healing can be fun. Yes, there are rough times when you have to look at the dark side of yourself. But, we don’t succumb to the dark side. We learn compassion for it. If we push it away, ignore it, or hate it we will succumb to the dark side of the force. Fear, Hatred, being completely unaware of the negative behavior patterns we have created is the life of the dark side. But I digress…

What makes healing fun is having group of like-minded people for support. You need like-minded people who can help you laugh and let go when you need. A group of people who will be as excited as you to try that new cauliflower taco recipe. Like-minded people who understand when you explain a bizarre healing experience or revelation you had that opened up a whole new door into your true self. A group of people who are going through the same experiences as you. Because, the other part of being a nerd is not adhering to social norms.

Now, we aren’t going to be so crazy that our family will check us into a mental health institution. But, as we change and grow, our behaviors change. Sometimes it throws people off and creates awkward situations. And anytime you make people uncomfortable you are walking outside social norms. But having a club gives us courage! And on the other side of that awkwardness is a lightness and peace that is the best feeling ever. I know because I’ve been there.

When I work with my wonderful clients, I am always sharing experiences from my journey.  Everyone starts at the beginning.  And the beginning isn’t always pretty! Along with sharing my stories, I am giving them tools to help them on their healing journey.  I teach them about the Enneagram and I provide energy healing. I teach them yoga and meditation. But not everyone lives in my city. Not everyone has access to one-on-one sessions with me.  SO! My hope is to take what I do in a session with a client and put it into this blog to help YOU on YOUR healing journey.

That is why I’m writing this blog – to share what I have learned on my journey. I want to share everything I’ve learned to help others heal. I want to help people discover how wonderful they are are fall in love with who they are. I want to help people find their inner healing nerd.

Where did your healing journey start? Was it an “aha!” moment? Or was it a difficult time in your life?  Feel free to share your story in the comments below.
