Thoughts on the Upcoming Movie “Solo: A Star Wars Story”

People keep asking me what I think of the Han Solo movie coming out. I rarely watch the Star Wars movie trailers as I don’t want anything spoiled. But there is so much hesitant buzz about this one that I broke my rule and watched the trailer.

Here are my thoughts:

1) From the get go this feels like James T. Kirk’s story if he had taken the road less traveled and left the Starfleet Academy all together.

2) I see Alden Ehrenreich trying to play Harrison Ford’s Han Solo, but not quite pulling it off. And to push the performance more they might be throwing in famous Han quotes from past movies such as the “We’re fine,” scene from Episode 4.  And famous moments as in the Cantina scene in Episode 4 when Han un-clips his blaster from it’s holster. But after watching the Cantina scene again, I can see where Alden Ehrenreich is trying to play the Han Solo we first met. The question is, can he pull off the Han Solo from later in the movies after he softens up and starts to care? And most importantly, can he do the Harrison Ford signature charming crooked smile?

3) I see more Benicio Del Toro than Harrison Ford in Alden Ehrenreich. If you want an exact mix, combine Benicio Del Toro with Marlon Brando and Leonardo DiCaprio. They all have a feel about them that is NOT Harrison Ford. Maybe it’s an energy of innocence? The kid that thinks he is getting away with his hand in the cookie jar as opposed to a true criminal? Or many an energy of nobility that leaks out regardless of what he tries to do? Maybe these aren’t the exact differences, but you get where I’m coming from. I mean, Harrison Ford played Jack Ryan and President of the United States. I don’t think Leonardo has played anything that noble. Marlon Brando played the Godfather. And Benicio Del Toro is always playing seedy characters including in The Last Jedi.

4) Woody Harrelson is the Han Solo we really want. Too bad he isn’t 25 years younger.

5) I think the surrounding characters will actually hold the movie together. Admit you get a happy nostalgic feeling when you see Lando. But the other characters don’t have as much to prove, do they?

6) Of course I will go see the movie and I will go opening weekend. And unless they throw in a Jar Jar Binks character, I will enjoy it. Correct me if I’m wrong, Star Wars Fans, but I believe this movie is a one off. Which means if Alden Ehrenreich doesn’t pull it off, it’s not the end of the world. Unless Han is planned to be in the Boba Fett movie. Regardless, these new Star Wars movies starting from The Force Awakens haven’t been 100% awesome. But they are a lot of fun. And that’s all I’m asking for. I really really do hope that Alden Ehrenreich pulls it off, at least 75%. Then we will all be fine. Really. We’re fine. We’re all fine here…
