Two Things – A 2021 Commitment

I’m always excited for a new year to begin. I love the idea of leaving the old behind and walking into a brand new year. It feels as if anything is possible.

Especially this year. 2020 has been a bit of a challenge. This past year has pushed all of us outside our comfort zones. We have all had to look at the world in a different way and figure out how we will live in that world.

This year, more than ever, I witnessed people coming together to help each other walk in this new world. I observed generosity and selflessness toward strangers I only see in movies.

Is it possible to keep trend of helping your community going on even after COVID-19?

I think it is, with the help of my “two things” theory.

I make a point to commit to do two things every year to contribute to society. It could be the same thing every year. In my mind, if everyone made a point to commit to contribute to two things to help out others, the world would be a better place.

For years my two things were donating blood regularly and donating to Colorado Public Radio every month (aka an “evergreen member.”)

I haven’t fulfilled my commitment the past few years. And I have been consciously aware that I have not been fulfilling my two things.

I don’t want 2021 to be that way. COVID-19 is a bit of an obstacle, but I’m determined to work my way around it. And to ante up the game, I’ve decided to modify the “Two Things” commitment.

For 2021, I am committing to do two things that benefit the community every month. They can be the same things, but I can change it around if I want.

For example, in August I donated to the Food Bank of Colorado on behalf of my cousin for his birthday. I don’t have to donate just to CPR every month. I can switch it up when I want.

Furthermore, I’ve only considered doing things through organizations. Why couldn’t I do something for a neighbor? Or be one of those people who pays the bill for the person behind them in a drive through?

There are plenty of ways to help the community and I’m excited to explore the options.

  1. I love this idea! Can we get a facebook group to share ideas and plans? Something that I’m planning on doing is reading about high functioning Autism. At least one of my nephews is HFASD. It sounds like it benefits me more than the community but I think if we all took some time to better understand others, we can all benefit.
