Why Yoga Doesn’t Give a Shit and Neither Should You
I found this inspirational poem on Facebook at the beginning of the year and it has not left my thoughts since. It was written by Samantha Eibling. You can find her blog here.
Yoga doesn’t give a shit…

Yoga doesn’t care if you can touch your toes. . .
bend your knees.
Yoga doesn’t care if you have read the Sutras chapter and verse. . .
you are welcome.
Yoga doesn’t care who Lulu or Lucy are or if your pants are vegetable dyed hemp. . .
you are not your clothes.
Yoga doesn’t care if you are having your best day or your worst. . .
any day is a good day to practice.
Yoga doesn’t care if you believe you are physically broken or emotionally bankrupt . . .
come as you are.
Yoga doesn’t care if your pants are see-through. . .
and they are, trust me.
Yoga doesn’t care if you speak English, French, Korean or Sanskrit. . .
just speak your own truth.
Yoga doesn’t care if you are Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Atheist, Agnostic. . .
as long as you walk in love.
Yoga doesn’t care if you think you are “all that”. . .
it will humble you.
Yoga doesn’t care if you are fat or skinny, tall or short, brown or white. . .
you are not your vessel.
Yoga doesn’t care if you do not believe in yourself. . .
it will show you the way.
Yoga doesn’t care if you’ve been a jerk your whole life. . .
it will reveal your inner light.
Yoga doesn’t care if you practice yin, Bhakti, Bikram, vinyasa. . .
this practice offers so much.
Yoga doesn’t care if you practice in the heat or cold, in a bed, on a cushion or in a chair. . .
it cannot be contained.
Yoga doesn’t care if you practice one limb or all eight. . .
you have to start somewhere.
Yoga doesn’t care if you can’t shut off your mind. . .
that is why it is called a practice.
Yoga doesn’t care about Chaturanga, Adho Mukha Vrksasana,
or Eka Pada Rajakapotasana. . .
those asanas are the illusions to which we attach ourselves.
Yoga doesn’t give a shit. . .
Let go of judgment, labels and perfection. . .
I love this poem. It reminds me of a conversation I had with a massage client years ago who was practicing Yoga and loving it. She said, “I heard Yoga calling me for years. I finally surrendered to it and have been so grateful.”
Surrender to it. What a thought.
My best friend would know I was about to have a healing breakthrough when I would say to her, “I’m in a ‘fuck it” phase.'” That meant I wasn’t worrying about what other people thought, and I wasn’t worrying about the outcome. I was just going to do what I felt needed to be done. “Fuck it” is just another way of saying “Don’t give a shit” which is just another way of saying “Surrender.” Depending on your opinion of foul language, the first two ways of saying it are just more amusing than the third.
As I was putting up the Christmas tree, I listened to a This American Life podcast in which a woman talked about her experience with Alcoholics Anonymous. She mentioned the AA saying, “Keep coming back. It works if you work it.” I thought, “That’s just like Yoga.”
Yoga doesn’t give a shit. It just wants to give you the opportunity to heal. And if that means 5 minutes a day, you are coming back; you are working it.
I think these two concepts are the hardest to get past in any healing process, Yoga or not. Your body wants to heal. The universe wants you to heal. You have to get past your ego and your daily comfort zone patterns to get there.
“I’m not flexible enough.” “I’m too fat.” “I’m too far gone to do that.” “I don’t have time.” “I don’t have the money.” “That’s not me.” “I don’t want to be one of those people.”
“What if I like it?” Which is just another way of saying, “What if I succeed?” Sometimes, I think this road block is stronger than all the others.
This is why I like the idea of Surrender and Keep Coming Back. When you surrender, there is no thought process. Not even belief. Just moving forward like water through the easiest route. And water is very powerful. It carves mountains by running through, evaporating, snowing back down and running through again…and never gives up. (By the way, our bodies are 60% water…*smile*)
Don’t give a shit. Surrender to the process…and keep coming back.
